COACH

AN ANIMATED AFFAIR

Designer Stuart Vevers is a rusted-on Disney fan, something which is also reflected in his work. When Vevers presented his summer collection for Coach in New York, the runway was alive with familiar childhood characters. The Aristocats smiled from T-shirts and hooded pullovers while Dumbos were paraded on skirts and bags.

Maje

On Tour

Light clothing, lots of bright white and floral patterns in unimaginable colours. Maje’s summer collection is a celebration of azure-blue skies and mild nights, making it wearable for both city folk as well as globetrotters. Oliver Hadlee Pearch photographed the campaign with supermodel Grace Hartzel, who, in her daydreams, travels to sunnier destinations. The Mediterranean, perhaps?

IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH TO BE FREE, OR DOES IT?

OUR COLUMNIST NIKOLAS FEIREISS ON FREEDOM

Sometimes I think about how free I am, and about freedom in general. There’s a traditional German song that says only thoughts are free. ‘Who can guess them?‘, as the lyrics put it. Of course, we live in a time of historic freedoms, yet that comes at a price. Some say that fashion is on the brink of making itself irrelevant and that anyone can do what he or she wants. That all styles are somehow ‘in’ and best when all thrown together. Now, now. The phrase ‘fashion dictatorship’ doubtlessly dates from another century, and thank goodness for that. On the other hand, freedom also has the power to make people uncertain. It demands an ability to make decisions. Freedom alone isn’t enough either; people need to know how to use it, too. If it’s just a question of style, then the risks aren’t that great. Aberrations in taste can be tolerated. They don’t have to be, and that’s a freedom that’s permitted too. Free people can be expected to inform and teach themselves. Including about fashion, through this magazine for example. As the late Karl Lagerfeld once said, ‘You can’t escape fashion. Even if fashion goes out of fashion, that’s fashion.’

Secrid

POCKETED

There is a new type of wallet coming from Holland, developed by family-run company Secrid. At its core is an aluminium card holder that shields cards from being read without permission. And, thanks to a patented mechanism, you will have your credit card in your hand with just a single click. A tannery with a centuries-old history – and also a known supplier for Italian fashion houses – produces the leather for the cases.
